News
20 February

from exercise 5 onwards, I am forced to revert to the old material from previous years. There simply isnt resources and time enough to make new material for the entire course.

In these old formats of exercises, there is some conflicting information on deadlines. The information on the webpage and in readme.txt file is the valid one.

20 February
CLARIFICATION: You will have the oppurtunity to hand in twice for each exercise. Only twice, so LOOK CAREFULLY AT THE PDF. THERE ARE INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO HAND IN!

20 February
Extension of deadline for task 2 with one day. New deadline 21st of February, 12 am

17 February
Exercise 3 is updated!

It had a missing section in it, which is now fixed. There were some typos I fixed while at it, and I put some new hints in the document as well. Task no 3 is now optional, if you aim for a grade 4 on this exercise.

28 January

Exercise 2 has a Matlab version issue. Check out the description below

Course organization
There will be one new exercise made available to you for every session. For each exercise there are several tasks for you to perform (2-4). These are to be handed in to me, instructions on how to hand them in are available in the provided pdf, and WILL NOT be done through blackboard. No communication is to be done through blackboard in this course.

There will be a total of 10-11 exercises in this course. Your will be graded for each exercise.

You may work in groups of 2, not more.

There is a deadline of 2 weeks for the tasks of each exercise. Exercises are graded as "Passed"(3), "Passed with distinction"(4) or "not passed" (0). If a deadline is missed for an exercise, you will have to resubmit late, which limits the max grade to (3), and will affect your overal course grade.

In the second part of the course (period 2) you will start on a small project. This project can have any grade in the range (1 to 6). There will be more details on the exact content of this project.

The final grade of the course is set with an algorithm you can download .

Compulsory elements/attendance
Handing in tasks and project on time are the only compulsory elements of the course. Physical presence on any lecture/exercise is not compulsory

Exercises
Introduction meeting
Start reading the in preparation. Get all files need for Exercise 1 .

During the first introduction meeting, I will briefly explain the outline of the course, and how you will be graded and what is expected of you. This should take no more than 30 minutes, after that we will get started with exercise 1 during the remainder of the introduction meeting.
Achieving high quality motion estimation in real-time is a topic of great interest. Current work has lead to the formulation of the interactive "squiggle". The below video clip is an implementation in matlab. It requires reasonably fast frame-rates (say 15 frames per second for good results, the video is at 30 frames per sec). The speed of computations enables it to run at over 100 frames per second with no real demands on the hardware(the thumbnail is quite bad, please click the video for it to start):

Meet the squiggle
and an uncostrained version (perhaps more fun to play with):

The algorithm is easily parallizeable, and is stable for larger motions. Currently it runs on a pyramid of two level to somewhat deal with larger motions.

Implementation on handheld devices is a promising future application.

The speed of computations can handle well over 100 frames per seconds(at resolution 256 x 256) in the current matlab implementation on a mid-range laptop (using the built in cam of the dell latitude). The frame rate does not need to be nearly as fast as that though, but 15 frames per second is recommendable. Somewhat optimized c-code version (aggresive optimization flags and using openMP) is much faster.

News
20 February

from exercise 5 onwards, I am forced to revert to the old material from previous years.

This should take no more than 30 minutes, after that we will get started with exercise 1 during the remainder of the introduction meeting.
from exercise 5 onwards, I am forced to revert to the old material from previous years. There simply isnt resources and time enough to make new material for the entire course.

In these old formats of exercises, there is some conflicting information on deadlines. The information on the webpage and in readme.txt file is the valid one.
Exercise 3 is updated!

It had a missing section in it, which is now fixed. There were some typos I fixed while at it, and I put some new hints in the document as well. Task no 3 is now optional, if you aim for a grade 4 on this exercise.

- When i copy paste certain code parts into matlab from the pdf, it doesnt work!

There are some problems copying from pdf files in general. There might be odd line breaks and weird characters appearing from nowhere. For this reason, I supplied scripts for the bigger code parts of the pdf. The best way to solve this issue if you find problems is to open a text editor, paste the code in there first, see that it is the same as it appears in the pdf(modify it otherwise), and paste the result into matlab.

Course organization
There will be a total of 10-11 exercises in this course. Your will be graded for each exercise.

You may work in groups of 2, not more.

There is a deadline of 1 week for the tasks of each exercise.

News
20 February

from exercise 5 onwards, I am forced to revert to the old material from previous years.
