HUMAI stands for test and Demonstration of HUMan-centered AI, and in its foundation lies the vision of Industry 5.0, stating that industry can become more efficient while at the same time focusing on our planet and the humans living there. The vision relies on three pillars: sustainability, human-centeredness and resilience; HUMAI will demonstrate two of those pillars: sustainability and human-centeredness.

National Gummi AB is a medium-sized company in Trönninge that manufactures rubber products based on fossil raw materials and are also developing eco/bio polymers for radical CO2 reduction1. The rubber-making process is complex since the quality and the properties of the end product are affected by many variables that are difficult to control. The complexity lies in that it is only in the third main production stage, the extrusion, that the effects of the material quality, mixing, and environmental factors can be seen. During each production stage, many individual adjustments need to be made, and each adjustment could generate a significant amount of unusable end products. National Gummi now want to decrease their waste levels radically while at the same time increasing the engagement of their operators; they want them to understand the process better through advanced digital tools.

The goal of HUMAI is to increase communication and engagement through testing an advanced digitalized solution in a naturalistic environment and demonstrating how business KPIs can be reached. The naturalistic environment is National Gummi, and the results of HUMAI will be a) the technical solution and b) a process implementation template for how companies can implement advanced digitalization solutions in a human-centered way in the manufacturing industry. The results will be demonstrated to a reference group, industrial companies with similar needs, as well as the public.
